Walnut and Sapele Coffee Table

Walnut and Sapele Coffee Table

A 42 inch round coffee table where every figure walnut can throw at you somehow went together with sapele, sitting on an 18 inch white oak base.

Where it started

My wife wants everything in the house to match, and I like crazy grain patterns doing different things, which is pretty much how this table happened. It was a happy accident, a pile of walnut with about every figure the species can give you plus some sapele, and somehow it all went together.

The wood

Walnut has a ton of natural color variation, and two boards from the same log can look like two different species, so the sort and the grain match on a top like this can take hours. I lay the boards out, flip them, rearrange them, and do it again until the transitions look like I meant them.

What the wood is going to doWalnut on top and white oak underneath is a species decision, not a finish decision, and nobody talks about it enough. White oak runs about a third harder than walnut on the Janka scale and walnut will dent if you look at it wrong, so the legs that get kicked by kids and chewed on by the dog get the tough wood and the top gets the pretty one.

How it came together

The top got glued up in the clamps and cut round on the CNC. The base is white oak, 18 inches tall, with sculpted legs and an X stretcher, all joined with the Domino, and the whole thing got a dry fit in the house before any finish went on.

Where it ended up

Here's where it ended up, walnut on top and white oak holding it up.

“The contrast is a species decision, not a finish decision. That's a design lever that doesn't get talked about enough.”
